Do you need a second photographer at your wedding?
I get asked this question all the time, and it’s a great one.
I am fully comfortable photographing weddings of all sizes on my own, and I rarely tell a couple they absolutely need a second photographer. The most common exception is international weddings, where logistics and unpredictability make a second shooter especially valuable.
That said, there are some very real benefits to having a second photographer. While it’s not a requirement for most weddings, it can really change the flow of the day and the variety of images you receive.
Here are the benefits of a second shooter at your wedding!
This is one of the biggest advantages. With two photographers, we can cover multiple parts of the day simultaneously.
For example, I can be with one partner while getting ready while my second photographer is with the other. I can absolutely photograph both on my own, but having two of us speeds everything up and creates a more relaxed timeline.
The same is true for wedding party portraits. My second will typically photograph one partner with their group while I photograph the other.
During cocktail hour, I often focus on family portraits while my second shooter captures candids, guest interactions, and the overall atmosphere. This division of coverage helps the day run more smoothly and ensures more moments are documented.

Weddings are full of moments that only happen once. A second photographer allows those moments to be captured from multiple perspectives.
Think about the first look, walking down the aisle, the first kiss, or the first dance. I usually position myself for the primary, straight-on composition. Meanwhile, my second photographer searches for alternative viewpoints.
For instance, I will photograph each partner walking down the aisle from the front, while my second may capture the same moment from behind, from the side, or from above if a balcony is available. These complementary angles add depth and storytelling to your final gallery.

Weddings are also about the people who came to celebrate with you.
With two photographers, you effectively have double the awareness for candid moments. As the lead photographer, my attention usually prioritizes the couple during important events. My second photographer, however, is often watching guests, reactions, laughter, and subtle interactions happening in the background.
This results in a gallery that feels fuller and more reflective of the entire experience, not just the main events.

This benefit is simple. Two photographers mean more coverage, more perspectives, and more images!
It is not just about quantity, but about variety. Your final gallery will have a broader mix of moments, angles, and candid interactions that would be harder for a single photographer to capture alone.

This is not the most fun topic, but it is important. Life is unpredictable. Illnesses, travel disruptions, and emergencies can happen.
When a second photographer is part of your coverage, there is another professional already committed to your wedding day. In the unlikely event that something prevents me from being there, my second photographer could step into the lead role while I arrange additional support.
For this reason, I almost always include second photographers for destination weddings and international weddings.

Ultimately, the decision is up to you! A second shooter is never about pressure or necessity, but about added flexibility, efficiency, and creative coverage.
If you’re not sure, I am always happy to talk through your specific timeline, guest count, and priorities to help you decide what makes the most sense for your day.
Second photographers are already included in two of my wedding packages because I truly believe in the value they can bring to a wedding day. That said, every wedding is different, and all of my packages can be customized or adjusted to fit exactly what you are looking for. Whether you know you want a second photographer or you are still unsure, we can always talk through the options and build coverage that makes the most sense for your day!
