Your dog is part of your family, and if you want to include them in your engagement photos, go for it! Here are some tips to help your session go smoothly while including your dog.

Tips for including your dog in your engagement photos

Know the rules and regulations

Not all locations permit dogs. For example, Rocky Mountain National Park does not allow dogs in most areas of the park. I’ll tell you if the location you’re interested in allows dogs, but just a heads up that some do not. 

Bring a leash

Make sure you bring a leash for your dog, even if they are Sight and Sound certified. Also make sure to bring water/snacks/whatever else your dog may need. 

Have a plan

I usually recommend having a plan for your dog for when they’re not in photos. Unless you want your dog in every photo, you will likely need to secure them somewhere while we take photos without them. Options include bringing a friend to watch your dog when not in the photos, tying your dog to a large bag, securing your dog to a nearby tree/rock, or leaving your dog in the car (weather and location dependent) for part of the session. 

Be prepared for other dogs and people

It is very likely that there will be other dogs and people in the area. You know your dog best, so if your dog is aggressive toward other dogs or people, please be prepared. 

Bring some treats and toys

Bring a favorite treat or toy! We can use the treat/toy to get your dog’s attention. 

Get some energy out

If your dog is super high energy, consider letting them get some energy out before the session.
